What is this step and why is it so important?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastic recycling: overview<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Plastic recycling is generally broken down into several stages: collection, sorting, crushing, washing, extrusion and finally transformation into new products. These impurities, if not properly removed, can compromise the quality of the final recycled product.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Poorly washed plastic can have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduced mechanical resistance,<\/li>\n<li>poor aesthetics quality,<\/li>\n<li>it can also release toxic substances when it is remade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Washing therefore ensures better homogeneity and quality of the recycled plastic.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;21px|||||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.16&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||1px|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you wash plastic?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There are 5 main stages, once coarse shredding has of course been carried out first:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1- Pre-wash step<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This is the first immersion of crushed plastic in water, aiming to remove large debris and reduce the load of impurities before the main wash, thanks to positive and negative flows. The aim is to isolate plastics from metals and other materials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2- Intensive washing<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At this stage, the plastics are <a href=\"https:\/\/capeco-recycling.com\/en\/industrial-plastic-grinding-stages\/\">crushed<\/a> under water, and subjected to centrifugation, sometimes with the addition of detergents or other cleaning agents. The goal is to remove most adhering contaminants. They are then dried.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3- Passage into separation baths<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The different types of plastics do not all have the same density, so we will separate them by passing them through a water bath. In water, having a density of 1, we can separate the olefins (PE, PP) which will float, from the styrenics (PS, ABS, etc.) which will sink.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4- Intensive washing<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>At this stage, the plastics are centrifuged again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5- Rinsing and drying<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>After washing, the plastic can be rinsed with clean water to remove residue from detergents and other chemicals. To minimize environmental impact, this water is treated to remove contaminants, then reused in the process to minimize process water consumption.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Washing and quality of the recycled material<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The quality of the wash is directly correlated with that of the <a href=\"https:\/\/capeco-recycling.com\/en\/recycled-plastic-a-more-sustainable-approach\/\">recycled plastic<\/a>. Ineffective washing can lead to contamination of the plastic, making it unsuitable for many applications. Careful washing, on the other hand, can result in high-quality material, almost identical to new plastic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #7cc68d;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The challenges of washing<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Despite its importance, washing presents challenges. Water consumption, chemicals used, or process water management are all issues to consider. Fortunately, innovations continue to emerge, such as closed circuit washing systems or the use of biodegradable solvents.<\/p>\n<p>Washing, although less visible than other steps such as collection or processing, is an essential link in the plastic recycling chain.
